What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive and painless procedure wherein a device emits laser energy into the unwanted hair follicles. The beam of light passes through the epidermis and targets the unwanted follicles, disabling their reproductive cycle. This prevents the targeted hairs from growing again, helping you achieve permanently hair-free skin. With each session, you’ll notice that your hair grows out thinner and sparser than before until it stops growing altogether. Most men need a few laser hair removal sessions to stop all unwanted hair growth.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Your hair grows out in three stages — anagen (growth stage), catagen (transition stage), and telogen (resting stage). During the growth stage, your hair follicles are connected to the roots, i.e., the dermis and blood supply. Over time, the hair follicle disconnects from the root and enters the transition stage, following which it eventually falls out. At any given point, approximately 20% to 40% of your hair follicles are in the growth stage.
Laser hair removal only targets the hairs in the growth stage. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in your hair follicles, killing the follicle. If the hair is connected to the dermis, it interrupts the hair’s reproductive processes, thereby stopping hair growth. Each successive session successfully stops hair growth from a few more regions, and this process continues until new hair stops growing completely.
