What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a technique wherein a laser device is used to stop hair growth in targeted areas. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the unwanted hairs, which, in turn, destroys the hair follicle’s root, stopping hair growth. However, it takes a few sessions to achieve completely hair-free skin. How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
To understand how laser hair removal works, you must first understand the science behind hair growth. Your hair grows out in three phases, each lasting several weeks or months. The stages are anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the growth phase wherein the hair follicles are connected to the dermis and blood flow. Once the hair follicle is disconnected from the dermis, it enters the transitory catagen phase, following which it enters the final telogen phase and falls out.
Laser hair removal is a procedure wherein the pigment in your hair absorbs the highly targeted beams of laser energy. The laser energy converts to heat energy and kills the hair follicle. If the hair follicle is attached to the dermis (anagen stage), the heat energy kills the root, stopping all future hair growth from that particular region. At any given point, approximately 20% to 40% of the hair follicles are in the anagen phase.
As such, each laser hair removal session stops a percentage of the hair growth, making your hair grow finer and sparser until it stops growing entirely.
